MS 67 PTA GENERAL MEETING, SEPTEMBER 20, 2007

MARTA AGOSTI CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER. AN AGENDA, SURVEY, & BUDGET WERE DISTRIBUTED PRIOR TO THE MEETING. THE AGENDA WAS CHANGED IN ORDER THAT MRS. McGRATH COULD INTRODUCE NEW STAFF MEMBERS.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

MRS. McGRATH GAVE A SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION OF OUR SCHOOL.

WE HAVE 11 – 6TH GRADE CLASSES (10 GENERAL ED/1 SPECIAL ED)

11 – 7TH GRADE CLASSES (ALL GENERAL EDUCATION CLASSES)

12 – 8TH GRADE CLASSES (10 GENERAL ED/2 SELF CONTAINED SPECIAL ED CLASSES OF WHICH 1 IS A CLASS FOR EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED CHILDREN)

UNDER THE NEW INITIATIVES OF THE CHANCELLOR THE NOTION OF A ZONED MIDDLE SCHOOL IS BECOMING OBSOLETE. WE ARE BEING MANDATED BY THE CHANCELLOR THAT ANY CHILD COMING IN FROM THE OFFICE OF CHILD PERSONNEL MUST BE ACCEPTED. WE CANNOT ASK FOR PROOF OF ADDRESS.

WE REGISTERED OVER 60 CHILDREN AT THE END OF THIS SUMMER & THE 1ST WEEK OF SCHOOL. HALF OF THESE NEW ADMITS ARE NOT ZONED FOR OUR SCHOOL. IT IS COMMON THAT FOR PROOF OF ADDRESS A NOTARIZED LETTER STATING THAT A STUDENT IS LIVING WITH SOMEONE IN THE ZONED AREA IS ACCEPTABLE FOR ADMITTANCE. THIS NEW PROCEDURE IS MEANT TO ACCOMMODATE NEW IMMIGRANTS WHO DON’T WANT THEIR LEGAL RESIDENCY STATUS THREATENED.

SOME SITUATIONS OCCURRED DUE TO THE ADDITION OF 2 NEW CLASSES. ADDITIONAL CLASSES WERE CREATED AND CHILDREN WERE TAKEN AT RANDOM FROM THEIR ORIGINAL CLASSES TO THESE NEWLY CREATED CLASSES. THIS DIDN’T CREATE TOO MUCH OF A DISTURBANCE AND WENT RELATIVELY SMOOTHLY.

THERE ARE MANY NEW FACES ON STAFF AT 67:

2 NEW INTERIM ACTING ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS:

MRS. BARBARA CHOIT – 6TH GRADE I.A. A.P. AS WELL AS OVERSEEING THE FOREIGN LANG., ELA & SOC. STUDIES DEPTS., AND TRANSPORTATION/BUSING ISSUES. MS. CHOIT IS A FORMER TEACHER AT MS 67 WHO HAS BEEN IN OUR SCHOOL FOR 11 YEARS

MS. CHOIT REPORTED THAT THE 6TH GRADERS HAVE MADE A GREAT ADJUSTMENT. MOST STUDENTS HAVE RECEIVED THEIR TEXTBOOKS AND WE’RE STILL WAITING FOR DELIVERIES OF OTHER BOOKS. OUR 6TH GRADERS WILL GET 5 MOS. EA. OF SPANISH AND FRENCH, AND WILL EXPERIENCE ALL OF THE ELECTIVES (I.E. DRAMA, ROBOTICS, CHORUS, ART, ETC.) MS. CHOIT IS IN ROOM 224A IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.

MR. ROBERT CHAMBERS IS OUR 7TH GRADE I.A. A.P. AS WELL AS OVERSEEING THE MATH DEPT.

MRS. MC GRATH INTRODUCED OUR NEW TEACHERS:

JENNIFER KOONTZ – DANCE TEACHER

HER MAIN GOAL IS TO HAVE THE STUDENTS DEVELOP THEIR OWN CHOREOGRAPHY FOR THE END OF THE YEAR. MS. KOONTZ HAS BEEN DANCING FOR 19 YEARS AND HAS A DEGREE IN DANCE EDUCATION FROM HUNTER COLLEGE.

THE DANCE PROGRAM HAS A VERY OPEN CURRICULUM AND SHE WILL BE TEACHING TAP AS WELL AS DANCES OF DIFFERENT CULTURAL STYLES.
