PTA MS67 General Meeting, June 24, 2008
Marta Agosti called the meeting to order at 7:30pm.
Maria Mo presented the proposed budget for 2008-2009 and explained each of the line items. The motion to approve the budget was passed.
Mrs. McGrath reported that the state test scores had been received but she was not permitted to speak of specific scores, however, she did say that our children did well on the ELA and our scores on the Math were “through the roof.” Mrs. McGrath stated that we have a lot to be proud of.
Regarding the organization of our school next year Mrs. McGrath informed the members that we have to add another 6th grade class bringing the total to 10 sixth grade classes for 2008-2009.
Mrs. McGrath spoke of a 1.3% cut in our school budget.
It was necessary to excess support services (guidance counselor) which Mrs. McGrath explained would be the least disruptive to our children.
A question was raised about the total portion of the budget that was cut. Mrs. McGrath explained that it totaled $271,000.
She was pleased to have found out that the hold harmless monies were given back to the principal.
Mrs. McGrath stated that support services referred to a guidance counselor. Because there are very few children in our school that receive mandated counseling services our budget typically only receives $52,000. We have had to come up with the extra funds for the extra counselors our school has employed. It would cost $50,000 to fund a full-time counselor.
Mrs. McGrath also reiterated that we will start the school year with 10 sixth grade classes; 10 seventh grade classes and 10 eight grade classes. Each of the 7th and 8th grade classes are expected to have approximately 30 students per class.
Mrs. McGrath also mentioned that because there are so few children entering 6th grade that are non-SP that all classes will be SP classes.
The meeting was adjourned.
