PTA MS67 General Meeting, May 15, 2008

MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 7:20PM.

MARTA ASKED THE MEMBERS PRESENT TO LOOK OVER THE MINUTES FROM THE LAST MEETING.

A MEMBER MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES; ANOTHER MEMBER SECONDED.  A MAJORITY OF THE MEMBERS PRESENT APPROVED.

EXECUTIVE BOARD ELECTION:

VIRGINIA PRESENTED THE SLATE FOR 2008-09.  THE MEMBERS INTRODUCED THEMSELVES:

CO-PRESIDENTS:  MARTA AGOSTI & BONNIE SONG

TREASURER:  MARIA MO

RECORDING SECRETARY: DORIS ISKAROS

VIRGINIA ASKED FOR A MOTION TO APPROVE THE SLATE FOR THE EXECUTIVE BOARD FOR 2008-2009 AS PRESENTED.  A MOTION WAS MADE, SECONDED AND APPROVED BY THE MAJORITY PRESENT.
SLT ELECTIONS:

A NOTICE WAS SENT HOME TO INFORM PARENTS THAT THERE WILL BE 2 VACANCIES IN THE PARENT COMPONENT OF THE SLT.  MARTA EXPLAINED WHAT THE SLT’S FUNCTION IS.  THE TERM FOR EACH MEMBER IS 2 YEARS.

MARTA ASKED FOR ANY NOMINATIONS FROM THE FLOOR.

ONE OF THE MEMBERS WAS UNABLE TO COMMIT TO NOMINATING HERSELF NOW, BUT WOULD KNOW BETTER IN SEPTEMBER.

MARTA WILL FULFILL THE POSITION OF THE PRESIDENT CORE POSITION ON THE SLT.

A MOTION WAS MADE TO NOMINATE AND APPROVE BONNIE SONG, INGRID GUAPISACA, AND JENNY CHO AS THE PARENT MEMBERS FOR THE SLT.
STAFF RECOGNITION LUNCHEON

THE DATE IS JUNE 12TH. MARTA IS SENDING AROUND A SIGN-UP SHEET TO GET PARENTS TO HELP OUT WITH THE LUNCHEON.

YEAR END DINNER

MARTA SUGGESTED THAT SINCE WE COVERED THE BUSINESS MATTERS AT THIS MEETING WE WOULD HOLD OUR LAST GENERAL PTA MEETING AT THE YEAR END DINNER.  OUR LAST MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 12TH.  MARTA SUGGESTED THAT WE HOLD THE DINNER THE WEEK OF JUNE 16-20TH.  MORE THAN LIKELY THE DINNER WILL BE HELD ON JUNE 17TH.

THE DINNER MIGHT TAKE PLACE AT GIARDINO’S UNLESS A PARENT IS WILLING TO DO THE RESEARCH AND SECURE ANOTHER PLACE.

LORI BUTERA OFFERED TO LOOK INTO LOCATIONS AND PRICES.
TREASURER’S REPORT

OUR FUNDRAISING BUDGET IS ABOUT $2000, WHICH IS SHORT OF OUR PROJECTION.

KAREN DINEGAR THANKED THE PARENT MEMBERS WHO VOLUNTEERED THEIR TIME AT THE ARISTA RECEPTION.  IT WAS A LOVELY RECEPTION AND VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

A PARENT ASKED ABOUT THE VIRTUES PROGRAM.

MRS. MCGRATH EXPLAINED WHAT THE PROGRAM IS.

SLT REPORT

MARILYN MENTIONED THAT THE CEP TOOK UP A BIG PART OF THE MEETING.  ARLENE COMPLETED THE PARENT PORTION OF THE CEP.

SCHOOL ORGANIZATION FOR 2008-2009 WAS DISCUSSED.   SCHOOL WILL OPEN IN SEPTEMBER WITH 9-6TH GRADE CLASSES WITH 30/CLASS, 10-7TH GRADE CLASSES WITH 29/CLASS, 10-8TH GRADE CLASSES WITH 33/CLASS, AND 2 SE CLASSES OF 12:1:1.

THE ISSUE OF CELL PHONE USE WAS DISCUSSED.

IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE RULES CURRENTLY IN PLACE WOULD BE CONTINUED.  CELL PHONES CANNOT BE VISIBLE IN THE SCHOOL BUILDING BUT CAN BE USED DURING RECESS.

FUNDRAISING REPORT

WE DID RECEIVE SOME NEW PLEDGES.

OUR SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST HAD A BABY GIRL.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

SHE THANKED THE PTA FOR HOSTING THE RECEPTION FOLLOWING THE ARISTA CEREMONY.

MRS. MCGRATH THANKED JENNY CHO FOR HER WORK AS PRESIDENT THESE PAST 2 YEARS.  DUE TO JENNY’S HARD WORK A GRANT WAS RECEIVED FROM COUNCILMAN JOHN LIU TO REPLACE THE CURTAINS IN THE AUDITORIUM.
AP’S REPORT

MS. CHOIT – THE LN/DOUGLASTON PARADE COMMITTEE HOLDS A CONTEST –

WE HAD THE GRAND PRIZE WINNER.  WE HAD WINNERS IN THE ARTWORK AND ESSAY CATEGORIES.

EACH 6TH GRADE STUDENT RECEIVED THEIR TALENT SELECTION.  THESE WILL BE DUE THIS FRIDAY – ALONG WITH A FOREIGN LANGUAGE CHOICE.

THE GIRL SCOUTS WILL BE PLANTING FLOWERS ON MAY 19TH.

THE ESL DEPT WILL BE HOLDING A FOOD FAIR FOR THE ESL CHILDREN.

STUDENT FACULTY BASKETBALL GAME ON FRI, JUNE 6TH.

THE FOREIGN LANG. PROFICIENCY WRITTEN EXAM WILL TAKE PLACE ON 6/23.

THE ORAL PART IS ADMINISTERED DURING SCHOOL.

A PARENT MENTIONED THAT THE DATE CHOSEN HAPPENS TO ALSO BE THE SAME DATE AS CARDOZO’S GRADUATION.  THESE DATES ARE SET BY THE STATE AND ARE OUT OF OUR CONTROL.

MR. CHAMBERS

THE TRIP TO MADAME TUSSAUD’S WAS A GREAT SUCCESS.

THE 7TH GRADERS HAVE TAKEN THE EARTH SCIENCE PLACEMENT EXAM.

A PARENT ASKED WHEN WE WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE PLACEMENT.  MRS. MCGRATH SAID WE WOULD FIND OUT IN THE LATE SUMMER.

MR. SURRETT

THE EARTH SCIENCE  REGENTS HAS 2 PARTS – THE LAB WILL BE ON 5/29; THE WRITTEN PART WILL BE ON 6/20.

THERE WILL BE AN OPEN HOUSE SESSION ON 5/19 AFTERSCHOOL.

THE 8TH GRADE SS TEST WILL BE ON 6/3 AND 6/4.

THERE WILL BE AN OPEN HOUSE SESSION ON 5/31.

THE INTEGRATED ALGEBRA MATH REGENTS WILL BE ADMINISTERED

ON 6/17.

6/11 – 8PM – AWARDS NIGHT – PARENTS WILL RECEIVE A LETTER INVITING THEM TO AWARDS NIGHT.   THE NOTICE IS GIVEN TO THE STUDENTS IN SCHOOL.

MR. SURRETT EXPLAINED SOME OF THE AWARDS.

THE PROM WILL BE AT THE DOUGLASTON MANOR ON 6/18 AT 6PM.  PARENTS DON’T ATTEND BUT MANY TEACHERS COME TO CHAPERONE.

GRADUATION WILL BE ON 6/25 AT 1PM.  A REMINDER NOTICE WILL BE SENT HOME.  THERE ARE 2 TICKETS PER CHILD.

THE WASHINGTON TRIP WILL TAKE PLACE ON MAY 21-23.

A PARENT ASKED ABOUT HOW ROOMS ARE ASSIGNED AND MR. SURRETT ASSURED US THAT THE STUDENTS KNOW WHO THEY ARE ROOMING WITH.

A PARENT ASKED ABOUT THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ARISTA VS. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

5 QUARTERS OF 85 OR BETTER FOR ARISTA

11 QUARTERS OF 90 OR BETTER FOR NHS

A PARENT ASKED ABOUT THE YOUNG PEOPLE’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE.  MRS. MCGRATH MENTIONED THAT IT IS NOT A SCHOOL SPONSORED PROGRAM.

OLD BUSINESS

THE ADS ON THE PTA WEBSITE WERE NOT MEANT TO APPEAR, BUT WERE MERELY A TRIAL RUN, AND HAVE BEEN REMOVED.
MARTA AGAIN THANKED THOSE PARENTS WHO HELPED SET UP THE RECEPTION FOR ARISTA:  JENNY, SARAH, SALLIANNE, AND MR. PRADIS

AT OUR END YEAR DINNER WE WILL VOTE ON THE PROPOSED BUDGET.  MARTA ASKED FOR PERSONS TO HELP PUT TOGETHER THE PROPOSED BUDGET

EARLIER IN THE MEETING MARTA ASKED FOR MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE AUDITING PROCESS.

REGARDING THE MONEY SPENT FOR SCHOOL PLANNERS IT WAS SUGGESTED BY THE QUALITY REVIEW PERSON TO PURCHASE A SMART BOARD INSTEAD.

3 SMARTBOARDS WERE PURCHASED WITH DOE MONEY.

WE ARE SPENDING APPROXIMATELY ANOTHER $2-3000 FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
PARENT COORDINATOR

5/17 – CAR WASH 10AM-2PM.  CHILDREN WHO ARE PARTICIPATING MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT.

CHILDREN HAVE MADE BLANKETS FOR RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE.

THERE WILL BE A WORKSHOP ON CAREGIVING ON 5/27 – HOW TO BABYSIT – AT 3:30 P.M.

5/31 – IS THE RELAY FOR LIFE.  PARTICIPANTS MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE BY GOING ONLINE TO WWW.RELAYFORLIFE.ORG

JUNE 10TH IS THE NIGHT OF THE ARTS – THE CONCERT, CHORUS, DANCE AND ART SHOW.

MRS. MCGRATH WANTED TO CONGRATULATE THE ELECTED OFFICERS.

A MOTION WAS MADE TO CLOSE THE MEETING AND SECONDED.  A MAJORITY OF THE MEMBERS APPROVED.
